Audience Theory

I have shown my work so far to a few people and these are some short written piece of what they think of it so far.

So I like it, the acting is sharp and my favourite part was when the editing was perfect in terms of the gunshot and the guy reacting. I wasn't too sure on the scope effect, maybe zoom in a little to make it more realistic? Something about seeing the surroundings made it look slightly strange. Otherwise I think it's really good, Scott! I thought you were on-point with the editing and I was interested throughout.

 Really like your film but i think the titles and fonts at the start could be more action and bigger and bolder and actiony and i really like the sound concept at about 2.40 but it just needs some minor work!

 I find this really helpful becuase at the end of the day im not just making the film for my self im trying to make a film which will appeal to my audience will enjoy. So as a result knowing what they want plays as a huge advantage !!

Story Board

This is my ruff outline I don't want to feel to tied down to it and instead I want to allow the location to inspire and influence me as I go along. However by doing this it means I have something to work from and I wont go out there umming and arrring not to sure where to start!

Preliminary Task

My Preliminary Task shows my location at which i have chosen to film in a film format rather then just photos and a ruff idea of working out the route i want them to take while cutting though the woods. I have experimented with using lighting effects or not I have experimented with the hand held shake very real effect to a smooth style of filing. I have experimented with a variation of shots from different angles and worked out which give the chase a faster pace more dramatic look. The final main thing that it has given me the opportunity to do is to look at the way the costume looks when out in the woods. 

Codes and Conventions


A code is a system of signs. A system of signs that are created in order to be decoded to revealed a code to the viewer.

Technical codes - These are the physical things which we choose and then do to effect the way the shot portrays what we are trying to say. Some of the things we can alter to do this is the lighting, framing/camera angles and costumes.

Verbal codes - This is effected by the words the writers choose to use when writing the script as well as the way in which the actors deliver them.

Codes are interpreted in different ways depending on the person who is viewing the media background. Weather they come from a very religious or nonreligious back ground or if they are very wealthy or not very wealthy etc etc can have a big impact on the way they choose to interpreted the codes. By playing on peoples backgrounds you can use it to help them to relate to it.


 Examples:

 Their is a man walking away silhouetted- against the background it is a low upwards looking shot. The camera angle giving the impression he is powerful and important while the lighting used to hide his identity makes him mysterious and untrustworthy. These kind of variations are down to the person interoperation which is effected by there background.  -

Convention:

 The Conventions of a genre are the defining characteristics which differentiate one genre from another. An extreme example of this would be a rom-com which would ordinarily have very bright soft lighting while a horror would have very dark lighting used to only show certain areas of the shot to create tension.

 Three ways conventions are met

Technical-camera angles, movements and shots.

Written-Script

Audio-dialogue, music and non-diegetic sounds.

Representations

The term representation in media context means that something is shown in a certain light. This could be as simple as showing something to be good or bad or as complicated as trying to make you act upon something such as buying a product or forcing a view upon you.

The opening sequences of the James Bond film Casino Royal are of a fast pasted foot chase though the construction of a building. It shows the representation of James bond and the bomb maker as almost supper human The bomb maker with extreme talent and skill by shooting it from a way to show him doing all of it with true ease and James bond using brute for and ignorance. The over all way it is represented is to give it an atmosphere of a fasted paced dramatic chases scene in which two men have one focus and will go to any length to achieve it.

One of my all time favourites Heat is an action film about how a cop goes to the very edge to catch the criminals. The final scene are in the streets and then in a deserted air port its so simplistic with just two men and 1 gun. However it is more exciting then some of the chases where cars are exploding and building falling down and It is simple simplistic suspense that makes the film and what I want to make sure I achieve in my Film.

In my short film I want the genre to be primarily of action however and It cant be any thing else when it will be shot in broad day light. Although I want to try to incorporate some of the conventions horror films use to build mystery and suspicions and suspense and fear of the baddy. From doing this is let the viewer knows easily who the baddy is and make you feel as if the goody is in a greater deal of danger rather then how I feel many of the modern day action films loose the fear for the goody because we know they always win to by using some horror conventions to almost tease the viewer into thinking this might not be the standard action film good v baddy looses goody rides off into the sun set!

Chase Jarvis & Me

Chase Jarvis is an America Photography who I particularly love for his use of diverse perspectives he has taken his photographs from and his use of the rules such as leading lines rule of thirds ECT….

 This photograph shows depth of field and how even tho his is the smaller of the two subject he is clearly the most important due to the fact that the focus is on his so blurring ever so slightly the woman on the left.
 This photograph shows how the rule of thirds has been used with the sky runner and background and the foreground of grass.
 This photograph shows the rule of leading lines the road not only splits it in to the rule of thirds but also leads your eye in to the centre of the photograph.
This photo shows the rule of thirds doesn't necessarily have to be applied left to right / top to bottom but it can be used diagonally to give a more unusual perspective. 

This shows the rule of thirds and how by using a very extreme low shot it can be used to ad emphasis on one element so for example in this image it helps to draw attention away from the dramatic background and place it firmly on the cyclists.

This photograph above of the sun and the one below which is a landscape show how the rule of thirds can be used to frame a shot and give it real substance. 

 This photograph demonstrates the use of focus to give a great depth of field. Drawing my focus across across the image and down the lane.

This final photograph shows the use of leading line I have framed this as to achieve many leading lines you have the line of the rope the line of the sea meeting the sky the line at the top and the line of the cliff as well as the line of the spray coming from the wake board.
